The Adventurer, The Gods, and the Celestial Orb

Written By Redkor

The ancient tomb of Tihopan was dark, dank, and reeked of dried rat fecal matter. Pots, jugs, and weapons were scattered on the floor making it difficult to move around. Lara Croft, the forever adventuress, held a flare in her right hand and a pistol in her left. The flare went out just as she stumbled into a pit dark as a stormy night. She screamed as she plunged to her certain death. Then, everything went into a thick yellow haze...

Lara found herself in a bed with shining gold posts and elaborate sapphire and ruby decorations. Lara identified the designs as designs in Egyptian Hieroglyphics. The bed was quite soft and comforting, so she snuggled under the crimson-gold covers. She looked up, and cried out with fear, for she had never seen anything like it. It was a man with the head of a falcon.

"Well, I see you have finally awaken," observed the man/falcon creature. "I am Ra, the god of the sun." Lara said nothing. She just laid there staring at Ra. She then looked to her left and saw a man with the head of a jackal. "You must be Anubis, the god of burial," Lara thought. "He cannot answer you, for he does not speak," Ra explained, as if the gods could read her mind. "Would you like to get up now?" "Um, uh, I guess..." Lara stuttered. "We are going to chase after Set, the god of destruction and storm, for he has stolen the Celestial Orb," Ra announced. "What is the Celestial Orb?" Lara asked. "The Celestial Orb is what keeps the Universe in balance. If it used for evil, the Universe will become corrupt, and everything will eventually be destroyed," Ra explained again.

"Why would someone bother to destroy the Universe?" Lara asked, wondering why they would go through the trouble. "Set is the lord of destruction! Because he can't rule it, he will destroy it so others can't. He is very selfish." Ra looked very nervous for a sun god. "There is no time for more explaining, we must hurry!"

There was a bright flash, and they were in a dark forest. Crystals littered the ground as well as twigs and blossoms. The animals were strange too. There were centaurs, nymphs, sytrs, blue and pink snakes, unicorns that had very long horns, and elephants feet, and other things.

"Where are we going? I have never been to such a place." Wondered Lara as she looked about. The sunlight filtered through the trees.

"To northern Atlantis," mumbled Ra, as he started walking down the path with Anubis.

"Atlantis? But I've been there and I don't remember any forests!" Lara explained.

"You were in the Unholy Pyramid where Set is worshipped, and Natla, the corrupt ruler, was punished. That is where Set is going." Answered Ra with a sigh.

The trio continued on for a very long time, and they were lost. "Pardon me," Lara asked a sytr that was playing his flute on a crystal. "We're pursuing someone at the Unholy Pyramid...."

"The Unholy Pyramid?" the sytr shrieked with horror. "Are you nuts? That place is cursed! You'll die there!"

"Set, the lord of destruction is going in that direction. He has the Celestial Orb. We must stop him before it is too late," Ra reasoned with the sytr.

"Well, seeing that you are the god of the sun, I will go with you to a certain point," told the sytr. "But I really shouldn't...."

"For heaven's sake! We're talking about the fate of the Universe here! Chided Lara.

"Don't smart off to me, girl!" warned the sytr, raising the crystal like a boss getting up to yell at an employee.

"Don't make me have to kill you!" yelled Lara with a godlike fury, raising a magnum to the sytr's head. Suddenly Anubis shot a bolt of lightning between the two.

"Stop fighting and listen to me!" Ra roared. "There's no time for playing around. We must find the Unholy Pyramid."

"Alright, I'll go, but to a certain point. By the way, if you're wondering, my name is Zipzan," said the sytr.

"Mine's Lara. I suppose you already know the gods' names.

"Indeed I do, let's go," said Zipzan. And they were on their way. After a while, when it became dark, Zipzan stopped and spoke.

"I can follow you no more, but I can tell you this much, despite the risk I'm taking that I cannot tell you about. Go down the road to a clearing and fight the hydra. Then go to the Temple of Holy Weapons. Then, after getting a sword there, go to the Unholy Pyramid and destroy Set." Zipzan then disappeared into the shadows.

Lara didn't take the hydra seriously, for she had fought many terrible monsters. "I'll be okay, I fought the Alien Boss so easy, I could polish off a hydra," Lara thought to herself. She turned to Anubis, who gave her a worried look.

At last they came to the clearing Zipzan told them about, but there was no hydra. Suddenly it burst out of the trees. What a hideous sight it was! The hydra had nine heads, rough spiked scaly skin, fiery eyes, and a mouth that spit acid! But the worst thing of all, it was five times bigger than the Alien Boss. Lara immediately began to fire at it with her uzis, but to no avail. The bullets bounced right off. The biggest of the nine heads glared at her with fire yellow eyes and bellowed with rage. It took an ugly claw into a fist and attempted to squash her. Luckily Ra was able to save her.

"Let us handle this, mortal!" scolded Ra with his red eyes flashing. He turned around and commanded Anubis to work his sorcery. A storm cloud collected around Anubis as the lightning flashed fiercely around him. A giant laser like beam streaked out of the mass of thundering clouds and flashing lightning hit the hydra with a mighty force. The hydra was pushed into the sky and exploded so that the world was lit up. The hydra was so incinerated there was no rain of body parts.

Thunderclouds around Anubis faded slowly. And being immortal, he was still there, alive in one piece.

"Lara," Ra grumbled severely. "The next time we deal with monsters that big, don't interfere!"

"But I can kill monsters in the Unholy Pyramid, can't I?" Lara begged.

"Fine," Ra sighed. "But be very careful. The aliens are far worse this time, and much smarter."

"Yes, I'll be careful."

"Good. Now let's go. We have no time to waste!"

At the top of a hill, they saw a gold building gleaming in the pink dawn light.

"That must be the Temple of Holy Weapons," Lara observed. When they reached the top of the hill, they marveled at the golden roof and floor, and pillars. There were elaborate mosaics of sapphire, depicting the hero of Atlantis. Weapons of the heroes were placed on sacred pillars with the heroes' names on it.

"Zipzan told us to get a sword from here. I guess we'll go with that one," Lara thought to herself as she drew a large, two-handed sword from the pillar that had Garcelos inscribed on it.

"That sword will be fine," agreed Ra. "I'll hold it while you and Anubis destroy the beasts."

By noon they reached the Unholy Pyramid. Doors flew open with a gigantic rumble. The inside was nothing new to Lara; pulsating veins, puss colored globes, lava pits, fire rivers, and traps. The traps were easy to pass. Anubis and Lara handled the monsters okay too. Then came the hard part.....

The three came to a large room with demonic symbols and an altar. Lara shuffled up behind Set and raised the sword to kill him just as he was to put the Orb on the altar.

"Excuse me, but aren't we interrupting something?"

"Don't pester me, mortal. I am a powerful god and will destroy you if you don't leave!" thundered Set as he placed the Celestial Orb onto the Altar.

"It's too late anyway to do anything now."

"Not very likely," Lara smarted off as she thrust the sword into his back.

Set gave a horrible hyena howl and dropped to the floor, steam rising from his skin. Lara threw the body into a lava pit as Ra and Anubis faded away with the Celestial Orb.

"Wait!" Lara cried but everything went black and she returned to reality.
