Start this level by running forward, up the stairs which spirals to the right. When Lara reaches the top of the stairs, walk to the left side of the platform, opposite the ladder. If Lara dives into the pool below, she will perish by being sucked into the blades of the giant propeller churning in the water below. Instead, take a running jump across the pool and grab onto the ladder on the opposite wall. Climb up the ladder and run forward, following the tunnel to the right. Push the button at the end of the tunnel to stop the huge propeller in the pool below.

Now it's safe to dive into the pool below, so reverse directions, and run back down the tunnel and dive in. Swim past the giant propeller, lighting a flare if necessary, and swim forward as the underwater tunnel narrows. At the end of the underwater tunnel, Lara will find two grenades (1, 2). Pick them up, reverse and swim back to the open end of the pool. Surface for air if necessary, against the left wall of the pool Lara should find a lever. Throw the lever to open open a doorway. Surface, and exit the water at the steel platform with the yellow and black painted stripes.

Now ready some weapons, preferably automatics or Uzis, and turn left and walk into the tunnel with the open door. Lara may target a couple of thugs across the pool, but ignore them for now. Turn left again and face the left wall of the tunnel. This is an important step because Lara needs to target the more urgent enemies first. Now sidestep into the large room, and run forward along the left wall. A doberman (1), a rig worker (2), and a crewman (3) will emerge from a tunnel at the far end of the room. When Lara locks onto her first target begin jump forward and backwards while firing on the enemies. Remember to release the fire key when an enemy goes down, and then lock onto another enemy and repeat. When all three are dead, pick up shotgun shells (3) from the rig worker and two sets of Uzi clips (4, 5) from the crewman. If Lara is not already carrying the Uzis at this point, she will pick up the Uzis and one set or clips instead.

Now run back to the main room where there are two hooks on mechanical gantries. There are two blocks in the middle of the water. Run and face the block that is not obstructed by the handrail, and aim Lara such that she can take a standing jump to cross the water when the gantry has moved away from her, and grab the block. Shimmy to the right and pull up onto the right side of the block, where Lara is safe from the moving hook. Walk forward along the right edge of the block until she reaches the corner1 and then turn and face the second block on the left. Start Lara on a running jump as soon as the hook passes her from right to left. Grab to reach the next block and pull up.

At this point, ready pistols to finally take out those two thugs (4, 5) on the other side of the water. Either, Lara can wait patiently for the thugs to come out of the room onto the walkway, or she can take the final running jump onto the walkway to draw out the thugs. Just be careful to remain on the right edge of the block when performing the running jump so as to not get clobbered by the hook. It is to Lara's benefit to kill the thugs when they are on the painted walkway and not inside the room on the right, because there is a good chance that they will die on the slope, making it impossible to pick up items that they drop. After they are dead, pick up the small Medi Pack (6) and box of flares (7) that the thugs dropped. Keep in mind that if Lara is shooting at them on the walkway, she can always jump back into the water to safety, rather than taking a beating from the thugs. Also if Lara misses either jump or needs to avoid the thugs, she can swim to the left end of the room, through an underwater tunnel at the bottom of the pool, surface and climb up the stairs to try the block jumps again.

Now run down the walkway and enter the passage on the left. Inside Lara will find a wide ramp on the right that leads to a pool toxic slime. It is very easy to slide into the toxic slime, so it may be prudent to save the game here.
SECRET #1
Walk to the middle of the ramp until Lara reaches the edge. Step forward to slide down the middle of the ramp and allow Lara to fall into the hole to find SECRET #1, the stone dragon (8). If Lara runs off the flat ledge onto the ramp, her momentum will cause her to overshoot and slide past the hole. Jump up and grab the lower edge of the pit and pull out of the hole on the lower side.
Slide down the middle of the ramp and take a jump when Lara slides to the very end of the ramp. If Lara repeatedly slides into the toxic waste, try holding down the forward key while Lara is sliding down and when she takes the jump off of the ramp, and also try lining Lara up with the right edge of the walkway on the other side.

Once Lara has crossed the toxic pool, run forward down the ramp, and take a left and head into the tunnel beyond. Turn right and run forward. The camera will show that Lara has a long climb ahead of her, so run forward to the ladder and begin climbing. At the top of the ladder, shift to the right and release to land on the platform.

Turn right and run forward, but don't drop down into the hole yet. Beyond the hole are two pairs of M-16 clips (9, 10) and to the right is a set of clips for the automatics (11).

After grabbing the clips, walk over to the hole and look down into the hole. Walk around the hole and turn Lara until she is facing the left wall such that she can hop backward and fall down the hole and slide down the ramp backwards. So drop into the hole and slide backwards, grabbing the end of the ramp. There is a crewman (6) running around on the catwalk below. As long as Lara does not release, the crewman will ignore her. Wait until the crewman approaches and walks right up to Lara and then turns around to walk away. Them immediately release the ramp and grab onto the ledge below. Immediately pull up and ready weapons while the crewman still has his back turned and pump him full of lead. After he's down collect two sets of clips for the automatics (12, 13) from him. If Lara is not carrying the automatic pistols at this point, she will receive a pair of automatics and one pair of clips instead.
Blue Pass Card
Now walk over to the left side of the connecting catwalk, which is the side that does not end at the door. There is a handrail with one broken piece on the left. Turn and stand in front of the broken handrail and look down Lara will see a alcove below. Aim Lara at the alcove, then have her hop back and take a running jump over the alcove. Lara will land on a incline above the alcove and slide safely into it. Grab the Blue Pass Card (14) and then turn around and slide down to the bottom of the room.

Turn and run to the tunnel on the left and climb in. Follow the tunnel as it corkscrews up and to the left, making two left turns. Slow down when Lara reaches the top, where tunnel widens and turn left. Here Lara will find the long ladder she climbed earlier. Line Lara up with the ladder and take a running jump and grab to reach it. Then climb to the top of the ladder. Again, shift to the right and release the ladder. Turn right and run forward to the room with the hole. Drop back down the hole, sliding down ramp backwards and grab the bottom of the ramp. Release and grab the ledge below. Pull up and run forward and turn right this time and head toward the door.

Use the blue pass card to open the door. Enter the passageway and a second door will open automatically as Lara approaches. Go through the door to enter a corridor that forms a loop, draw weapons. As Lara runs forward and to the right, the second door just behind her will close and she will find two dobermans (7, 8). Kill them quickly and reverse, as two more dobermans (9, 10) arrive to attack from behind. Kill them quickly as well. In the shadows behind Lara, she should be able to spot here newest foe, a brute armed with a flamethrower (11). Just stay a good distance away from him and they go down quite quickly under constant pistol fire.

After they are all dead, run around and locate the two bulkhead doors. Go ahead and open both of them. One has stairs leading up while the other has stairs leading down. Lara needs to first head through the doors with the stairs that lead down. Ready pistols and head down the stairs. When Lara reaches the bottom of the stairs, before she emerges in the room beyond, immediately begin hopping backwards. A thug (12) will emerge, so kill him while keeping a safe distance.

Run back down the stairs and when Lara reaches the room, which contains a pool, a concrete slab suspended over the pool, a control room with some goons inside, and a circular saw on the other side of the pool. Upon entering the room immediately turn right and jump into the water. Swim down and swim in a semicircle to the left until Lara locates an underwater tunnel at the bottom of the pool. Swim into the tunnel, but only go just past the entrance, and reverse directions and swim back to the place where Lara jumped into the water from and surface and pull up. While Lara was in the tunnel, she should have been able to hear the breathing apparatus of a scuba diver (13). After Lara is safely on dry land, ready pistols and stand at the edge of the water. The scuba diver should emerge from the tunnel, so take him out.

Dive back into the water and swim down to the underwater tunnel and swim inside. Follow the tunnel and turn right and swim to the end of the tunnel. Throw the underwater lever which opens one of the underwater gates that Lara just swam past. Now reverse directions and swim back down the tunnel and turn right and swim into the open gate. Follow this underwater tunnel and take two right turns until Lara reaches another underwater lever on the left wall. Throw the lever, which opens a door at the top of the other set of stairs. After throwing the switch, turn right and continue swimming forward down the tunnel taking two more right turns until Lara reaches the other gate, which will open automatically for her. At this point Lara might be a little disoriented, but as soon as Lara emerges from the gate, turn left, swim forward and then turn left again. Lara should be able to see the main pool now so surface for air, since she's probably just about out of breath.

Now exit the pool near the stairs that led into the room, and then run back up the stairs. Turn left when Lara reaches the top of the stairs and head toward the other bulkhead door. Now Lara can head up the other set of stairs where there is a helicopter ready to take off. Ready weapons and head up the stairs that wind to the right, then left three times. At the top of the stairs, Lara can charge through the open door, but don't head too far into the room. From the top of the stairs, Lara will have to take out a rig worker (14), a thug (15), and a crewman (16). After the guards are dead collect a large Medi Pack (15) from the thug, clips for the automatics (16) from the crewman, and shotgun shells (17) from the rig worker. If Lara is not carrying the shotgun at this point, she will receive the shotgun instead of shells.
M-16 Assault Rifle
Head towards the helipad and watch the helicopter get away from Lara just before she can reach it. Run all the way across the helipad to the opposite side, where Lara will find a small control room with a passageway to the left which contains two flaming burners. First throw the switch on the right to turn off the outer flame. Lara must move quickly because the burners are on timers. Now run down the tunnel and fall into the trap door. Reverse, step forward and grab the M-16 assault rifle (18) and some M-16 clips (19) that are hidden in the shadows. Now climb out of the hole and exit the tunnel back to the control room.
Machine Chip #1
This is a good place to save the game. Throw the switch on the right again to turn off the outer flame, then push the button on the left to turn off the inner flame. Then run down the passageway, taking a running jump over the trapdoor that opens as Lara approaches it. If Lara falls into the trapdoor then immediately exit the passageway to try again because the delay of falling into the trap door is just long enough to prevent Lara from getting down and back the passageway safely. Grab the first Machine Chip (20) at the end of the passage and then reverse direction and make haste back out of the passageway, remembering to take a jump over the trap door on the way out.

Run back across the helipad and down the stairs. Turn right when Lara exits the stairwell and head back toward the other bulkhead door and down the steps. This time run forward to the steel crate, and push it once to reveal an electrical panel. Insert the machine chip into the panel to open the door on the left.

Ready weapons and enter the doorway. Enter the passageway until Lara spots a thug (17). Open fire and start hopping backward back up the passageway until the thug is dead. A flame thrower (18) will follow the thug out of the passageway, so fire at him from outside the passageway, taking jumps to the left or right to avoid his flames. After both are dead, collect a small Medi Pack (21) from the dead thug, and enter the passage. Once Lara is in the room at the end of the passageway, immediately turn left and run to the left end of the room where she can pick up two sets of harpoons (22, 23), then Lara can dive into the water. If Lara is not carrying the harpoon gun at this point, she will receive the harpoon gun and one bundle of harpoons instead.
SECRET #2
However, before diving into the pool, run forward to the back side of the pool where there are three control panels in between two orange tanks. Run past the control panels and past the second orange tank to find another control panel that is all by itself. Run toward the control panel and it will open to reveal a hidden passageway. Enter the passageway and run to the end of the passageway. Push the button on the right wall to open a grating at the bottom of the pool, and run back out of the passageway. Now Lara should dive into the pool and swim to the very bottom, and pick up SECRET #2, the jade dragon (24), then surface for air.
Swim down to the bottom of the pool to find an underwater passageway. Swim into the passageway about two lengths and Lara should be able to hear the breathing apparatus of two scuba divers ((19, 20). Immediately reverse direction and swim back to the surface in a zig zag pattern to avoid being hit by any harpoons. Surface and ready pistols. Stand away from the edge of the water tank and lock onto them from the surface and kill them both.

When they are dead, dive back into the water. Swim back down into the underwater passageway and at the end of the passage, turn left and swim forward. Lara will end up in a deep the pool. Swim up to the right to surface and exit the water at the low cut-out that is flanked by two concrete pillars. Ready pistols and turn around to kill two thugs (21, 22).

Turn around again and vault up onto the platform and throw the switch which opens one of the doors to the control room Lara passed earlier. Perform a quick safety safety drop back to the lower platform and ready pistols. Another scuba diver (23) will have appeared in the water, so take him out before jumping into the water.

After he's dead, jump into the water and Lara can swim all the way down to admire the minisub at the bottom of the pool, but be sure to surface for air before proceeding because it's a long way down and back. Otherwise swim down and to the left back into the passageway that Lara came in from. Turn right when she reaches the adjoining underwater tunnel, and swim forward back to the small tank.

When Lara reaches the end of the underwater tunnel, immediately turn left and surface at the left side of the pool. Ready pistols and reverse directions. Take two or three side flips to the left until Lara is facing the passageway that she came in from but is standing on the opposite side of the pool. Open fire on a thug (24) that runs into the room, taking a side flip to the right if he gets too close. When he's dead, take a side flip back to the left so that Lara is facing the doorway again, and a crewman (25) will arrive via the passageway. Immediately open fire while taking side flips to the right. If he's not dead by the time Lara reaches the other corner of the room, turn left and continue firing and side flipping to the left along the side the pool. When the crewman is dead, pick up a set of Uzi clips (26) from him and a small Medi Pack (25) from the dead thug.

Now run up the passageway to return to the room with the pool and the circular saw. Turn left and run up the stairs and into the control room. Inside the control room, throw the switch that that is on the wall in front of Lara and to the right. The switch activates the gantry and hook with the concrete slab, and moves it to the right allowing access to it. Exit the control room via the doorway and walk along the raised platform until Lara is across from the concrete slab. Turn left and face the slab and take a standing jump and grab to reach the slab. Pull up and take a running jump over the pool to the area on the other side, being extremely careful aim Lara such that she does not land on the circular saw.

Run forward and to the right and climb onto the crates in the corner of the room. Drop down behind the crates to find a passageway. At the end of the passageway, Lara will find a button. Press the button to raise the floor of the helipad, to reveal an area below it. Turn around and exit the passageway. Climb up onto a crate, and drop down the opposite side.

Dive into the pool, swim across to the other side, and surface on the other side. Ready weapons and head forward and up the stairs. Proceed carefully up the stairs. If Lara spots enemies, then open fire from within the stairway and hop backwards to the room below to obtain more room to fight. If there are no enemies above, then exit the stairway and turn left. Run forward until Lara reaches the wall, and turn right to face the open bulkhead door. Usually, two dobermans (26, 27) will charge out of the door first. After killing the two guard dogs, have Lara side flip away from the wall because, a rig worker (28) will emerge from the doorway. When he does, open fire and start side flipping back and forth, using the corner of passageway as cover. After killing him, Lara can grab the box of shotgun shells (27) he was carrying. If Lara still does not have the shotgun, she will receive it here instead of the shells. Repeat this procedure as a crewman (29) emerges from the doorway. Collect a set of Uzi clips (28) from the crewman.
Machine Chip #2
Run forward and turn left into the doorway. Head up the spiral stairway until Lara reaches the helipad, which is now raised, revealing an area beneath. Drop down into the area underneath the helipad, and run forward, around the big lift, to a passageway on the other side. Enter the passageway make a hairpin turn left to find a hole in the floor.

Ready weapons and stand on the right side of the hole, dropping into the hole diagonally to the left. Immediately a thug (30) will attack from the left. Face him and charge at him while firing. Take a jump over him and reverse, either in midair or when Lara hits the ground. When he falls, keep an eye out for a flame thrower (31) who is across the room All that fancy footwork guarantees that there's a maximum distance between Lara and the flame thrower. When Lara spots him, open fire and run or jump away. Keep dodging him and firing until he goes down. Pick up a second Machine Chip (29) from the dead thug.
Red Pass Card
Exit this room via the doorway that is directly opposite the center steel door and the red pass card lock. The doors that were formerly closed to Lara now open automatically when she approaches. The doorway opposite the red card lock is the most direct. Run through the doorway, and continue forward through the bulkhead doors and down the stairs. Run forward and turn right when Lara is opposite the concrete slab. Stand at the edge of the pool and take a standing jump and grab to reach the slab. Take care to aim Lara away from the circular saw and a running jump over the pool and land next to it. Run forward to the wall behind the saw and put the machine chip into the panel on the wall, which will stop the circular saw. Turn around and run forward to grab the Red Pass Card (30) from in front of the circular saw.

Now dive into the water, swim across the pool, and surface and exit the water. Turn left and run up the stairs. Run across the hall back into the center room, and use the red pass card to open the door. Ready shotguns and walk into the doorway. Do not walk all the way to the edge of the doorway, because if Lara takes a look down into the trench below, she can see that there is a rig worker (32) just below waiting for her and can hit her with his shotgun fire. Instead, turn around so that Lara is facing out of the doorway and stand squarely in the middle of the doorway. Take a hop backward to drop into the trench and open fire on the rig worker. He won't even know what what hit him.

Run forward down the hallway, and turn right at the end. Drop to the floor below. Run forward and turn right to enter the next room, which contains a pool and a couple of dead thugs that Lara eliminated before. Be careful not to fall into the water, because it will be a long detour to get back. Collect a small Medi Pack (31) from one dead thug and a large Medi Pack (32) from the other. Now run all the way around the room, past the passage, until Lara reaches the scuba tanks that are hanging on the wall. In front of the tanks are two sets of harpoons (33, 34).

Turn around and enter the small passage that slopes downward. At the end of the passage, there is a close door. Don't worry about it. Turn left and drop to the shallow water below. Wade forward until Lara reaches the end and then pull up. Lara can hear voices from ahead
As soon as Lara enters the room, turn and face the right. A crewman (33) and another rig worker (34) will be running up the stairs to greet her. Open fire from above, and both enemies should be dead long before they get anywhere near her. Run down the steps to the floor of the room.
SECRET #3
At the base of the stairs, ignore the man lying in the center of the room. Instead, run straight forward, and turn left into the open doorway. Inside the jail cell, turn left again, and run forward into an alcove to find SECRET #3, the gold dragon (35), and four sets of Uzi clips (36, 37, 38, 39). Turn around and exit the jail cell.
Run forward to the monk that the henchmen were beating up on and enjoy a cut scene.



As Lara approached this room earlier, she heard voices...

"Blood or answers, I have no preference. You should spill a bit of both!" Marco threatens, growing impatient.

One of Marco's men sputters merrily, "Okay Marco, glad to have your heart."

There are sounds of punches thrown and groans of pain.

"What do you want? Come on, stick to your stomach," the lieutenant spits. "Tell me, where in Monastery should we look? Eh, brother?" Marco's man was interrupted by Lara's arrival.

Now Lara is standing over the monk who has been beaten within an inch of his life. The monk looks up and states, "Oh, you are not one of them."

"But you are a monk?" Lara asks.

"Brother Chen Barkhang," the monk introduces himself pleasantly, "You have come for me. I saw bright lights surround me."

Lara kneels beside him to tend to his wounds. "That was gunfire. I think it was them who got taken away by it," Lara states dryly.

"But you are my guide," Chen insists. "My pathbeater to next incarnation. I have done my time here, haven't I?" He asks.

"What are you doing here with Marco Bartoli?" Lara asks back. She then spots some wetsuits hanging on the wall, and finds one that she'll fit into.

"Nothing," the monk replies, "I live righteous life here for reasons rooted only in necessary evil as my father was before me when he bombed Gianni's vessel deep into these waters. Now I'm here, uh was here, to prevent his son from salvaging the seraph," Chen continues.

"The seraph?" Lara interrupts.

"You not know my life's work well," the monk points out. "You sure you not here for them?"

"Their Jackanory2 days are well over," Lara replies. Lara changes into the wetsuit as the monk continues to speak.

Chen continues, "They want the seraph to unlock a malignant treasure we contain in our monastery in Tibet. Since being stolen by imbecile vagabonds centuries ago, we've been without key to it. Relying solely on cleansing of our prayers to keep it subdued." Lara removes her boots and tosses them over Chen's head. He ducks reflexively, and continues, "Then the occultist, Gianni B., acquired it. Trouble we knew. He breathed life back into ancient belief. One not to be stopped by any amount of head bowing. And now again it is here. Marco, infected with madness. He has violent mind, but not yet the power to satiate it. So we reach for our weapons once more."

"The true Detox3 of evil," Lara chimes.

"Where can you be taking me?" the monk asks, still convinced that Lara is some goddess that has come to carry him to a new incarnation. "Thought this was my big break. Guess change as often does rest. I need one."

No sooner has Chen finished speaking, does Marco Bartoli emerge on the balcony above. He opens fire on the two below. The monk hit by his first two bullets. Lara returns fire and dives for cover in a nearby corridor. In the adjacent diving chamber, alarms are sounding to warn of the minisub submerging into the diving tank. Lara, knowing the submersible is being used for salvage work, quickly dives in after it.

  1. An easier way to cross the gantry hooks is to take a running jump diagonally from the first block to the opposite ledge as soon as the hook passes from left to right. Reverse as soon as Lara touches down on the opposite ledge and draw weapons to take out the thugs.
  2. CORE Design's script writer was apparently fed up with so many references to American culture that she decided to chuck in a few British references. Hence, "Jackanory is the name of a children's TV program in the UK where a celebrity reads out a story. Hence translation of the line would be: "Their story telling days are over."
  3. "Detox" is a the trade name of a household bleach or cleanser that is sold in England. The product is advertised "Kills all known germs dead."
